Physical Education at the Rose L. MacDonald School
Welcome Back to the 2014 -2015 School Year. Did everyone have a Great Summer? I hope so!
The students at the Rose L. MacDonald School came back from summer vacation ready to start and we did. There was a great deal of running in the gym along with working on and development of basic skills; jumping, hopping, skipping, galloping, side stepping, running, and running, did I mention we ran in the gym?
Throwing over hand and under hand through game play was next on the list with several different games that incorporate those skills. And we are still running in the gym.
Students at the Rose L. MacDonald School will be participating in a Basketball Unit. We will be focusing on dribbling, passing and shooting the basketball during the first few weeks.
Please remember to wear your sneakers on gym day and appropriate clothing to run and have fun!!

The basketball unit with the elementary students was a wonderful learning process. The students were scrimmaging after practicing dribbling skills, passing skills, talking about boundary lines and the importance of team work. We talked about the heart and how it pumps blood to the body during exercise. Eating healthy foods, drinking water instead of soda and exercise were also discussed.
The weeks before February Vacation the students were working on their under hand throwing and over hand throwing by playing Bowling Blitz and Medic. A game of Rat Tail got the students moving when the class started each day.
After February Vacation we have been working on the muscles in the legs and stomach by playing on the scooters. Floor hockey for 2nd & 3rd Graders was a big hit!! The students worked on "Playing their positions - Not the ball!!",
passing the ball and helping the goalie.
The 1st Graders were doing relay races. Scooter Safety was always addressed before each class - we need to keep the fingers in tack!!
The large Omnikin Ball was a big hit with the students. This ball promotes team work to accomplish a goal. The students worked together to move the ball through out the gym by pushing it, rolling it and bouncing it through cones on the floor. A round circle of Omnikin volley ball was a success with the 2nd & 3rd graders.
Rubbish Barrel Basketball is one of the best games played by the students at RLM! Students are on scooters throwing foam balls into a rubbish barrel that is on wheels being pushed through the gym by a student. The game is exciting to play and watch. The students worked very hard individually and as a team.
The weather is starting to warm up and in a short time we will be outside - Can't Wait!!!
Remember to wear your sneakers and dress appropriately for class!!!
As the weather is getting warmer and the back field is drying out we have been outside running and playing games. The students have been put through their paces with a lot of individual work such as jumping jacks, sit-ups, push-ups as well as group games.
The students did a wonderful job working with the milk cartons we use as baseball/softball gloves. The throwing and catching skills have improved greatly. This lead to "Home Run Derby" - Can you hit the ball off the batting tee, hit a specific spot on the wall and make a home run? Several of the students did!!!
We finished the year playing "Medic" - a game the students love.
I have enjoyed working with the students at the Rose MacDonald School and look forward to seeing them next year. I hope everyone has a great summer!!!
