Soccer and Flag Football for Grades 4-6
Welcome Back to the 2014 -2015 School Year! I hope everyone had a relaxing, yet active summer vacation. The school year in Physical Education class started off with a Soccer Unit followed by a Flag Football Unit with the students at the Howard School. The students worked very hard and I saw amazing team work, passing and receiving the soccer ball, goals being scored and positive attitudes on the field.
The students embraced flag football and played their hearts out. Even when it was to cold to be outside, they still wanted to play. The team work, the quick plays, working together and helping each other was wonderful to watch.
As the weather started to get colder and we were no longer going outside Basketball was the next unit.
Grade 4 & 5 will be working on dribbling skills, passing skills, shooting, knowledge and rules of the game, cardiovascular endurance, and will scrimmage using the full court.
Grade 6 students, after a quick review will start to scrimmage using half the court then going full court.
Update: The basketball Unit went very well. The students were engaged throughout the unit. We started working on dribbling skills, 3 different passes used in a game, lay-ups, foul shots, talked about the history of Basketball and how the game started, Cardiovascular Endurance and the importance of staying healthy, eating healthy foods and drinking water instead of soda. We practiced both zone defense and man-to-man defense. We started the games with a jump ball and talked about the boundaries, taking the ball in. How many minutes in a basketball game and how may quarters.
Through out the basketball unit there were two games going on, going across the court. The last 25 minutes of class we scrimmaged using the full court. Two teams would play, while the other two teams would watch and then they would switch.
The weeks before February Vacation the students participated in California Kick Ball which is similar to Kick Ball but different in many ways. The students enjoyed learning and playing a very active game of California Kick Ball.
By Far The BEST GAME EVER!!!!! - Jail Bombardment - that's all I have to say was played in the gym. The students played their hearts out and left with sweat dripping off their faces, looking like wet dish towels. Fun Was Had By All! And, we were working on throwing and catching skills, individual and group co-operation and team work to mention a few skills.
After February Vacation we started the Archery Unit. The 4th grade students are learning how to tie and use a string bow, as well as the 11 Steps to Archery Success. The 5th & 6th grade students are reviewing from last year as well. This program is brought to us through the Massachusetts Fisheries and Wildlife as well as the generosity of the PTO who helped fund the program last year. The National Archery in the Schools Program, NASP, is a safe and enjoyable archery experience for the students. The lessons are presented in a sequence that promotes safety and learning archery basics.
The 6th grade students will have the opportunity to show their parents what they have learned in the Archery Unit on April 9th, 2015. More information to come!!!
The Archery Unit went very well, the 4th graders did a great job learning vocabulary, making and using a string bow using a piece of string and the proper technique of the compound bow. The 5th graders remembered quite a lot of the vocabulary, tying a string bow and the proper technique of the compound bow. The 6th graders had the opportunity to demonstrate to their parents and family everything they have learned. Several students and their families came to the demonstration night and the students did a wonderful job explaining the different pieces of equipment, vocabulary used in Archery, tying a string bow and shooting at the target. Their parents were very happy to see what they have learned.
The Games Unit included favorites of the students such as; California Kick Ball, Bowling Blitz, Jail Bombardment, Battle Ship and "Plain" Kick Ball. Each game has it's own set of rules to follow as well as individual and group work to accomplish a goal.
Teather Ball was a huge hit with the students. There is something about hitting a ball tied to a string that brings out the best in everyone!!!
As the weather starts to warm up and the field is drying out the classes will be going outside to participate in Volley Ball, Frisbee Golf, Soccer, Flag Football, Kick Ball, Basketball, Jump Rope, Chalk, Hula Hoops and skip-It to mention a few games.
It has been a wonderful year working with the students at the Howard School. I hope everyone has a great summer and I look forward to seeing the students next year.
